Cork’s Lifelong Learning Festival promotes and celebrates learning of all kinds, whatever your age, interest or ability.

The festival’s motto is Investigate, Participate, Celebrate, and the public can do that by watching demonstrations, trying out skills, and seeing others, from the young to the old, show off what they are learning.

There are hundreds of events during the week – and they are all free. They include talks and walks, performances, taster sessions, workshops, displays – across a huge range – from fingerprint analysis to Handball, from discovering how much French or Irish you remember to exploring biodiversity in a graveyard ... and much, much more. At many of the events you can try something new.

Attractive free festival programmes are widely distributed and will be available from March 13 from library branches, all the organisations involved, shops etc. The full programme also appears on-line here.

The festival is organised by the Learning Forum, set up under the Cork City Development Board to address the key theme of Cork as a City of Learning. Chair of the Learning Forum is Ted Owens, CEO City of Cork VEC.

The Organising Committee decided this year to broaden the festival’s perspective to examine current ideas about education by each year organising a seminar – which will offer both those involved in providing educational opportunities & the general public a forum where they can express their views & exchange ideas.

The first annual seminar takes place on opening day, Monday March 26th in Triskel Christchurch at 11am with the title Lifelong Learning: from austerity to prosperity – at home & away.

It looks at Lifelong Learning, Community Education, Adult Education from both a national & international perspective - where we seem to be and where we might be heading; and how the Irish people might access education in these austere times. It is friends with Hume Global Learning Village in Melbourne, Australia, and the Limerick Lifelong Learning Festival, whose second festival coincides with Cork’s ninth.
